Life is a Game…

Total football is an attractive concept in which every player is capable of playing in any position. Rinus Michels, a famous Dutch coach invented this theory and successfully tested it during his stint with Ajax FC.

In football, there are three well defined roles- Defensive player, Midfielder and Striker. Every player must be specialized in any one of the above roles. But in total football, a striker may play in the heart of the defence, a midfielder may go into the attack and this is bound to confuse the opponents. But there is a major impediment to the successful working of this theory.

It puts high technical demands on the players as they have to adapt to various positions. Since the positions are to be frequently exchanged, the players’ adaptability and the chemistry between them are also highly essential. If this theory is not implemented properly, then you may find two players playing in the same position exposing the remaining areas to attack. Johan Cryuff was the famous exponent of this Total Football concept and in his words, “Simple football is the most beautiful thing in the world. But playing simple football is the hardest thing.”

But when a team plays Total football, there is no better spectacle for a viewer and the Holland national team showed glimpses of it in the Euro 2008. If only everyone can play that. Sigh!
